Animal Care Attendant - 1 Year Contract (with possible extension)

POSITION SUMMARY:
An Animal Care Attendant (ACA) is responsible for the overall care of the animals housed at the Timmins and District Humane Society (TDHS), as well as ensuring proper cleanliness of the shelter environment. The position also includes some administrative duties.
Individuals must be available to work certain holidays, as well as overtime as needed.
Individuals must also be available for emergency after hours, on-call duties on an approximately four (4) to six (6) week rotational basis.
Regular Shifts: Sunday to Saturday: 8am-4:00pm
or 8:30am-5:00pm or 9:30am-6:00pm.
Paid Hours: 7.5hrs per shift (5
shifts / 37.5hrs per week)
Start Date: November 11, 2024
Regular Rate of Pay: $21.00 per hour (3mos training-probationary period)
$22.00 per hour (regular rate after successful completion of training-probationary period)
On-Call Rate of Pay: $1/hr plus rate of $25.00 of pay for any call outs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Attending
to the overall care of shelter animals.
Ensuring ongoing physical, emotional, and behavioural observations to contribute to and ensure appropriate ongoing animal care/health plans. -
Cleaning, organizing and disinfecting the shelter, in order to provide a safe and appropriate environment for animals, staff, volunteers and clientele.

Administering prescribed medication to identified animals, as per the direction of the TDHS veterinary team.

Notifying the TDHS veterinarian and/or TDHS veterinary technician and/or the Executive Director of any observed health issues or concerns of shelter animals.

Communicating and working with the TDHS volunteers who may assist on weekends.

Completing emergency after hours duties which entails responding to animal control admissions; impoundment releases; foster-to-adopt home inquiries; animal care duties; and/or emergency euthanasias.
Assist and/or support in humane and/or public animal euthanasias.

Attending to administrative duties, including but not limited to, entering information regarding City tags, microchips, and relevant animal care information.

Abiding by all TDHS policies and procedures.

Working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Bill 168 (Violence and Harassment in the Workplace).

Other duties as deemed necessary by the Executive Director or their designate.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.

Possess a genuine interest and compassion for animals that translates to being their champion and advocate in all matters of animal welfare.

Must possess their own vehicle.

Must live within thirty (30) minute drive from TDHS in order to meet after hours emergency response requirement.

Must possess good communication skills, both written and verbal. The ability to speak French is considered a strong asset.

Must be dependable and reliable.

Must have excellent time-management and organizational skills in order to complete assigned tasks in timely manner and to a high standard.

Must possess the ability to problem-solve quickly, be adaptable to unexpected changes/demands, and work well under pressure.

Must possess good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.

Must have the ability to learn quickly.

Strong ability to take the initiative on tasks and/or ideas that benefit the animals and TDHS as a whole.

Must possess the ability to work in both a team and/or independent environment.

Must not have any physical limitations that would impede the ability to complete identified work responsibilities (i.e. ability to lift 30lbs or over; be on their feet most of the day).

Must provide a clean and current Level 2 Criminal Record Check.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Applications, Facebook and WordPress would be considered assets.

Education and/or relevant experience in animal care and animal handling would be considered strong assets.
