Peer Support Worker – Full-Time and Part-Time positions
The Agency: Jubilee Centre (CJC), located in Timmins, Ontario is a specialized live-in, community-based addiction & mental health agency offering high intensity, medically supported MH Crisis & WMS, Intensive Recovery-oriented Treatment & Rehabilitation Services, Primary Care, temporary housing and supports together within an integrated modified therapeutic community environment. We are seeking highly motivated and energetic individuals to fill these positions in our Interdisciplinary Client Care Team.
Summary of Duties & Responsibilities
The Peer Support Worker uses their lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to support residents in a trauma-informed, person-centered environment. Working within the interdisciplinary client care team, the Peer Support Worker builds authentic relationships with clients, provides hope, encouragement, and mentorship, and assists individuals in navigating their unique recovery journeys. This role promotes recovery, wellness, and empowerment through mutual relationships, modeling self-determination and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Peer Support and Recovery-Oriented Engagement
· Establish trusting relationships with clients by drawing on shared lived experience.
· Provide one-on-one peer support sessions and facilitate group sessions related to recovery, coping skills, and self-care.
· Collaborate with residents to set personal recovery goals and develop wellness strategies.
· Encourage the use of self-help resources, harm reduction strategies, and community supports.
· Work closely with the interdisciplinary treatment team to ensure a holistic approach to care.
· Act as an advocate for client-centered practices within the team.
· Participate in care planning meetings and contribute a peer perspective to discussions.
· Support clients in understanding and navigating program expectations, rules, and treatment models.
· Promote a sense of community within the agency through shared activities, group events, and informal
interactions.
· Support new clients in orientation and integration into the program.
· Foster an inclusive, safe, and respectful environment that acknowledges diversity and lived experience.
· Maintain appropriate records and documentation of peer support interactions in accordance with agency
policies.
· Track and report relevant data and outcomes as required.
· Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical boundaries in all interactions.
Qualifications and Experience
· Lived experience with substance use recovery, and willingness to share that experience in a professional,
intentional way.
· Completion of Peer Support training (e.g., Peer Support Canada Certification) or willingness to obtain within
6 months of hire.
· Knowledge of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented practices.
· Experience working or volunteering in a peer support or related helping role is an asset.
· Strong communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
· Comfort using computers and electronic documentation systems.
· A satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including vulnerable sector screening).
· Valid First Aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain).
Working Conditions
· This position is primarily night shift but could involve evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
· Work is conducted within a treatment facility setting.
· Exposure to individuals in crisis or experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness or substance use
challenges.
· Regular walking, standing, and light lifting may be required.
All other factors being equal, preference may be given candidates possessing one or more of the following attributes:
· Persons identifying as Indigenous and possessing a solid working knowledge traditional healing practices.
· Persons who have a solid working knowledge of Cree, Ojibway, or Oji-Cree languages
· Persons who are fluently bi-lingual in and able to competently deliver care in both French and English.
· Persons who have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use disorders and has been in the maintenance stage of uninterrupted recovery for 2 years or more.
Wages and Benefits: Wages are based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Part-time employees receive 17% of their regular hourly rate in lieu of benefits.
